This Could Have Been My Son — Why We Must Speak Out

This Could Have Been My Son — Why We Must Speak Out

I watched a video today that shook me. Police pulled a Black man out of his car and beat him in the street. I couldn’t stop thinking… That could have been my son. That could have been your son. That could have been any of us.

As a mother, this breaks my heart. As a Black woman, it fuels a fire in me. We are tired. Tired of watching Black and Brown bodies treated like they don’t matter. Tired of crying over names that become hashtags. Tired of wondering if the people we love will make it home safe.

But we will not be silent. God did not call us to sit quietly when injustice rises.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.” — Proverbs 31:8 (NLT)

As believers, we are called to fight for justice — not just with words, but with action, with prayer, and with boldness. This isn’t just a social issue. It’s a heart issue. A human issue. And a spiritual battle.

We must pray.

We must speak.

We must protect.

We must demand better.

I’m praying for every mother who has to wonder if her child will be the next headline. I’m praying for hearts to change, for justice to rise, and for God’s hand to cover our communities.

But I’m also speaking boldly — because silence is not an option.

A Prayer for Justice, Protection, and Healing

Father God,

We come before You with heavy hearts. Lord, we are hurting. We are angry. We are tired. We see injustice all around us — violence against Black and Brown men and women — and it breaks us. But we know You are a God of justice, a God who hears the cries of the oppressed.

Your Word says, “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed.” (Isaiah 1:17)

So today, we cry out for justice.

We cry out for protection over our sons, our brothers, our fathers, and our friends.

We cry out for healing in our communities.

Lord, give us boldness to speak truth.

Give us wisdom to act in love but with power.

Cover every Black and Brown life with Your hand of protection.

Break the chains of racism, hatred, and abuse of power.

And Father, heal our hearts. Give us strength to keep going, to keep standing, and to keep fighting for what is right in Your eyes. Let us not grow weary in doing good.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray,

Amen.

Crowned by Grace. Bold in Faith.
